Would soy sauce work as a Vegemite/Marmite substitute for somebody(me) to try its taste w/o having to buy it? For some reason people on youtube cannot describe its flavor using words or comparing it to other food items. From the few clues on Wikipedia & Youtube, it seems to taste somewhat like soy sauce. I imagine it tastes as salty soy sauce crystals that collect on bottles mouths and caps.

Grocery store bought soy sauce are original sauce bottled at factory so there is no add ons. Restaurants add sugar or even enhancers like MSG or chicken powder so you find it tastes better. ~ EDIT ~ Go buy a bottle of soy sauce, make sure you read the ingredients that show soy bean being the 2nd one after water. Do not buy those without soy beans and is only made with chemicals. Then add a little sugar and/or chicken powder into it. It will taste better to your taste bud, and you can adjust to your own liking. Or you can buy a bottle of teriyaki sauce.

No, it does not taste like soy sauce at all.. I'm Australian, and vegemite is pretty good on toast with cheese..and pineapple.. Yeah, i'm weird so what?

I tastes more like salty beer, not soy sauce.

People on youtube dont eat vegemite the right way. .You're only meant to put enough to make the bread golden, not black..Its not like peanut butter. A big jar should last a few months.

Marmite tastes nothing like soy sauce. Marmite is a very concentrated yeast extract with the consistency of very thick molasses. It's made from brewer's yeast and concentrated down to a thick paste. Some folks say it tastes like beer, but I've never tasted a beer like this, but try it because you will either love it or hate it.

Unfortunately if you're trying to buy the tiny Marmite jar (57g) we always had in our pantry, they have stopped making them. They are being sold in squeezable bottle now, however. It's awfully addictive if you like the taste, but my cousins positively hated it.
