"Calamari" is the Italian word for Squid. Chinese people also eat Squid, whether cut up into large rings and broiled on a grill, or eaten raw as sashimi, or breaded and fried like Calamari. Squid is appears in a variety of other dishes such as seafood stew/soup or even seafood fried rice.
As for why did your friend feel duped, only he can answer that question. He asked the waitress for a recommendation and she gave him one.
Or are you wondering why is Italian-style squid being served at a Chinese restaurant? In which case, that's your friend's fault for not choosing an authentic Chinese restaurant.

Your friend asked the waotress to recomend a dish. And the waitress recomened what she liked as a dish. The waitress was doing waht was asked. If your friend did not like that not the waitress's fault. Because the waitress dies not know what your frein likes. Your friend shoud have been clearer like asking fo a beef diss or a noodle dish or a chicken dish.

Different people have different tastes. When you ask someone for a recommendation, there's no guarantee that you're going to like the dish that's recommended even when the person recommending it genuinely likes it. Calamari is one of my favorites, but it's not for everyone. It's also easy to get wrong when you cook it.

Because fried squid is not a traditional Chinese dish. They eat it many different ways, but not fried - that's more a western influence.

As so many others have written: (1) It is calamari, with a "c"; (2) Deep fried calamari is NOT a Chinese dish; it is Mediterranean (and delicious)

salt and pepper squid is delicious. If you ask for a recommendation and take it, well, you can't really blame the person you asked.

Yes & No. I like it stuffed with a spicy Spanish rice and cooked in wet palm leafs. Also stir fried.

Was it the most expensive dish on the menu? Your friend is wrong, waitresses get asked that a lot, why would they lie?

Being "duped" means that one was deceived. Does he think the waitress lied to him in some way?
If not, I suspect he doesn't know what "duped" means.
"Dupe" is a behavior, not an emotion. He can feel like he WAS duped...doesn't make it accurate.

If prepared properly, calamari are just excellent. I can't understand what your friend was talking about.
