Question:
Sushi Restaurant?
2007-08-25 21:35:17 UTC
A friend has invited me to a sushi restaurant and I have accepted. I've never been to a sushi restaurant before though. I love all Asian cuisine and I am looking forward to it, but I wonder if there is anything I should know going in for the first time? Any food recommendations? Any information at all would be helpful.

The fresher, the better! Always ask your server/sushi chef about what fish were caught or obtained that day. Either that, or ask what he/she would recommend.

If you're leery about raw fish, there are some types of sushi and sushi rolls that are usually cooked--examples would be an Alaskan roll or Unagi (freshwater eel that is grilled and served with a sweet-tangy sauce). You can't go wrong with anything including crab (my favorite!).

For neophytes, I would suggest trying a Rainbow Roll, which is essentially a California roll topped with tuna, salmon, whitefish and avocado. Happy eating! You're going to love it.

I'm sorry that I have to say that you picked the wrong restaurant / cuicine, going to sushi restaurant (real good one) and expecting to have something vegetarian is a WASTE!!!! What fun is it to have vegetarian items in a Sushi Restaurant? I like sushi and I like them fresh and raw!!!! Kapamaki (cucumber) is damn boring! (though the cucumber is raw!) Seaweed?? It is for decoration on a sashimi dish, even the seaweed (konbu) in the miso soup is just one of the side ingredients and the main is tofu or other vegetables + the dashi (soup base) of the soup. As for the beginner, I still would suggest you to try the nice raw seafood items : ne gi toro maki (roll) - tuna belly pasted with finely chopped Japanese leek and sesame seed, it is real rich, fatty and taste good that you would not know that you are eating raw fish salmon scallop sweet shrimp (a ma e bi) Tips for ordering sushi in a sushi restaurant: It is good to have a seat at the counter top and have a view of how the chef prepared your sushi. Ask the chef or the waiter for recommendation of real fresh seafood. Good luck!

I always eat at sushi restaurants. Its like nothing to me. I guess its because I go to them all the time. When you first walk into most of them, the workers yell the Japanese word: irrashaimase. It means welcome. You don't have to say anything in response. Also...ummmm.. I don't know your nationality;but most Americans get sushi and california rolls mixed up. A california roll is just rice wrapped in seaweed with something else in the middle. A sushi is a small pile of rice with raw fish on top. I hope you like raw fish; it is good to me. It taste best when you dip in a sauce that you can make yourself. All you have to do is get some soy sauce and put a little bit of wasabi in there and mix it up. Be careful, the wasabi is very spicy

Try a little of everything! You won't know what you like if you don't try it. You might end up missing out on something really exquisite! I myself love the eel sushi best. Hopefully, it'll be a buffet so you will have the opportunity to enjoy everything visually as well. Do make sure that anything raw is chilled well before served to you. An upset stomach could really mess up the experience.

Dun mix your wasabi into the soy sauce. Use chopsticks to eat. The most proper way is to pinch a little bit of wasabi(it's very hot) and dip the sushi sideways into the sauce so that it doesn't get absorbed by the rice (too salty). Eat the entire sushi in one mouthful.

There are raw dishes and you should try. Fresh raw salmon taste good.

If you are afraid of raw food, there are lots of items on the menu that are not raw.

Udon/Ramen/Soba are basically noodles in salty miso soup. Always a safe and delicious bet.

Cold tofu is good for diets. Fried(Agadashi) tofu is nice too.

There are the BBQ items like chicken(yakitori), or grilled fish. They are quite easy on the palate too.

Some people don't give sushi a chance. So its great that you accepted the invitation. People don't really know that not all of your choices will be raw fish. I prefer cooked rolls. Dragon roll is pretty darn good - shrimp tempura in the middle, avocado and a piece of eel on the top!

Have fun!

If I wasn't in a sadistic mood I would walk you up the stairs of sushi as follows. California roll, spicy crab roll, shiro maguro or white tuna, Kani or crab, ebi or shrimp, maguro or tuna, sake or salmon, spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon roll. This will be your first sitting after this it's a personal adventure. These seem to be the most palatable to Americans. I would recommend staying away from sea urchin until more comfortable with this type of cuisine. Saba or mackerel is also one of my favorites but is not a real big mover in the states(oily fish strong taste but marinated in rice vinegar.

You are not going to present anual budget or presidential speech. You are going to a restaurant where your friend invited you. Just go normally. Go there and have a look menu if you need. If possible give some tip for waiters.

If the chef is watching you, don't dip the sushi in soy sauce, some chefs consider it rude. Just eat it all in one big bite.

well if youre a first timer, u might want to try a simpler roll. my personal favorite is the caterpillar role. cooked eel, avacado, cucumber, and sauce. its really good. also, nigiri(sp) is also good. most rolls are good, it all depends on what kind of fish or food you like to eat most. if they have them, i reccomend edimame, there cooked soy beans and there delicious! but just go for it! venture out. you'll be fine.

it depends if you're up to eating raw fish or not.......i usually go for cooked ones. servers are pretty cool when you ask them which ones are cooked and aren't. oh and that green paste next to the sushi isn't guacamole....try it if you like spicy stuff....it's wasabi.

try the cucumber and california roll..they have no fish in it but the california roll has lobster in it..make sure itsz real tho. after that u can try salmon or tuna.

not really.

if you like fish, you should like it.

I don't like fish, but I love the shrimp or sweet potato tempura rolls I've tried..

Just try what your friend suggests too.
