I bought some regular red, oval, mangos and some smaller, irregular shaped, yellow mangos the other day. They are still kind of hard. How do do you know when they are ripe and ready to eat?

Squeeze them. A ripe mango will give a little bit.

It depends on what species of mango you have. For those "manila mangoes" average size, oval, yellow skin throughout the fruits, the best tip is to observe the skin. The skin is wrinkly without any blemishes and still hard to the touch is a sign of ripeness. It also emits a very sweet and fragrant smell. There is also those "Kent" mangoes which is bigger in size, green skin with tinge of redness/yellow/orange color etc. It is through smell for its fragrance, and a slight softness to the touch. The best time to be sure of mango ripeness is during the mid season. Too early will be too green and later in the season will be either overrippen or under developed making the pulp hard.

My personal experience- Place hard mangoes at room temperature for 3 days. After it, we can use.

I just sniff it...I've lived in the tropics and sub-tropical regions for many years, where mangoes and coconuts drop off of trees all-year-round. Please DO NOT put your 'styro-foam' beer-cooler under a tree in such areas!
Cheers!

When they give a little when you squeeze them. Put them in a paper bag on your counter to help them ripen.

The feel of softness is essential. Experience is the best teacher.

it has that orange shade of color, or yellow- no more green, and kinda soft, but super soft, so softer than hard
